How chess moves are written

One page that explains how chess moves are written down, so a grown-up and a child can read the answers to the chess puzzles together.

Free to print and share. Black and white prints fine unless the sheet says color.

How chess moves are written: a board with square names, a move drawn as an arrow, the piece letters, the extra marks and a worked Mate in Two answer.

What's on it

  • Every square has a name: a letter for the column (a to h) and a number for the row (1 to 8).
  • A move is the piece letter and the square it goes to: Qg6 means "the queen moves to g6".
  • The piece letters K, Q, R, B and N, and pawns, which have no letter.
  • The extra marks: x takes, + check, # checkmate, ! a good move, and … for Black's move.
  • A Mate in Two answer, read line by line.

How to use it

  • Read it with your child before the first Mate in Two sheet.
  • Keep it next to the puzzles while you check the answers.
  • Children who know the moves can try writing their own games down this way.
