For teachers

Puzzles for your classroom

Start a lesson with a puzzle and everyone has something to try. Nobody has the answer yet. The talk is about how, not what.

Every puzzle page has free sets to print for any class you teach, a Learn sheet that works on the board, and the answers so students can check their own work.

A Learn sheet: a Count the Cubes example with the steps to solve it and a question to ask the class.

Ways teachers use them

A warm-up

One puzzle on the board as the class settles. Ask "How do you know?" and let two or three students explain.

A new kind of puzzle

Show the Learn sheet on the screen and work the example together. Then hand out the set.

Early finishers

Each set gets harder toward the end. Keep the last puzzles for the students who want more.

A station or center

A box of printed sets and the answer pages. Students check their own work at the end.

A mixed class? Many puzzles come at two or more levels, so the whole room can work on the same puzzle at different levels.

Curriculum

Each puzzle page has a "For teachers" section. It names the curriculum areas the puzzle works on, level by level, for the version of the site you are viewing: Common Core and CSTA in the US, the National Curriculum in England, NCERT in India and Cambridge Primary elsewhere. A box shows which math practices it uses.

We describe areas, not exact matches. Where nothing fits, the page says so.
