Puzzles for the kitchen table

Homeschool math has room for things a timetable squeezes out: a puzzle nobody has to finish, a long argument about a clue, a sibling who sees it first.

Mathy Puzzles are printable sheets for ages 4 to 12. Each set starts with a worked example and ends with the answers. You don't need to be a math person to use them.

Brothers and sisters, one puzzle

Many puzzles come at two, three or four levels. Print Logic Grids at Level 2 for one child and Level 4 for another, and they can talk about the same kind of thinking at the table.

  • Level 1, ages 4–6: picture puzzles, read the rule aloud once.
  • Level 2, ages 6–8: short written clues start.
  • Level 3, ages 8–10: more steps in each puzzle.
  • Level 4, ages 10–12: the hardest puzzles on the site.

A rhythm that works

  • Start with the Learn sheet together. Then let your child try first.
  • Ask "How do you know?" more than "Is that right?"
  • Stop while it's still fun.
  • The Sunday email brings a new mix each week. Keep the kinds your children love, and step a level down for the ones that frustrate.

Records and curriculum

Each puzzle page has a "For teachers" section that names the curriculum areas it works on, level by level, and the math practices it uses. If you keep records for your state or country, those lines are a place to start. We describe areas, not exact matches.
